Cardiff Harlequins RFC21330Win
Dinas Powys RFC12210Loss

Having defeated Avonmouth Old Boys on their home turf last week Dinas were looking forward to the second of their pre-season fixtures at the Dimond Field, Whitchurch where they took on Cardiff Quins who play in Division 1.

It has to be said that Dinas’ start was edgy with a number of players taking to the field for their first competitive match of the season. Quins had the better of the first twenty minutes, their good organisation and smooth handling resulting in two tries both of which were easily converted.

However, Dinas were far from out of contention as James Wiltshire turned on the burners to scorch his way up the wing leaving the Quins’ defence in his tracks. A dab down behind the posts meant that Sam Middlemiss’ conversion was straightforward.

At the half-way point the score stood at 14-7 to the Quins.

The second half was a more dogged affair with both teams encountering stout defensive plays from the other making free space a limited commodity.

It was Dinas who opened the second-half scores with a try in the corner by Lewis Griffiths, only after Nathan Williams and Morgan Williams had both made the hard yards and two powerful hand-offs which sent the defenders sprawling across the field. The conversion attempt from out-wide was kicked across the face of the goal by Sam Middlemiss but Dinas were back within touching distance.

Unfortunately the quality of the Quins’ backs shone through once more as they skilfully wove their way through the visitor’s defence leaving David Lloyd, fresh from a twelve month sabbatical, with a two-on-one which they exploited to the full. The Quins’ third try was converted adding to the pressure on Dinas. Despite a number of valiant attempts the Villagers were unable to touch down across the hosts’ try line. As the clock ticked down the Quins’ defence was pressured time and time again but Dinas were unable to break through.

The match concluded with a final score of 21 to 12.

Despite the defeat Dinas remain confident about the forthcoming season and look forward to the league’s opening match against local rivals Barry 0n the 3rd September.
