Dispirited Dinas Defeated by Porth

The disjointed Villagers crashed to a heavy defeat against Porth at the Llwyncelyn Welfare Ground in an uncharacteristically dispirited performance.

Porth, who had the advantage of the deceptive slope in the first half, kicked two penalties and scored a converted try during the first forty minutes. Dinas’ only reply was a single penalty to trail 13-3 at halftime. Searing breaks by Sonny Driscoll and Nathan Williams during this period went unrewarded and the Villagers lost one of their most potent offensive weapons when injury forced the dynamic Williams to leave the contest before the interval. Dinas finished the first half strongly and despite the slow start most of the travelling supporters were confident that, with the elements in their favour, an exciting second half was ahead.

The Villagers dominated possession and territory for the majority of the second half but were unable to register the first score during this phase of play. Instead, the Quins, taking advantage of some weak Dinas tackling, scored a quick-fire, long-range brace of tries within the first ten minutes of the second half to deepen the woes of the travelling contingent of supporters. With a full thirty minutes remaining, Dinas trailed a Porth team now brimming with confidence by 23-3.

Dinas had no option but to chase the game. However, an error-strewn performance presented the Quins’ left-wing, Brendan Clarke, with the opportunity to gather a dropped pass and race the full length of the pitch to score another try and extend the lead to a formidable 28-3.

Eventually, the Villagers crossed for a try of their own; the superb Sonny Driscoll accepted a rare pass and crashed over under the posts. The simplest of conversions by Gavin Cooper saw the visitor’s score advance to 28-10. This seemed to buoy Villagers. They appeared to find a second wind and enjoyed their most dominant phase of the match. Strong carries by Joshua Dunleavy, Tom Baister and superb Corey Imperato were met by a resolute home defence preventing Dinas from adding to their tally.

Porth emphasised their superiority by adding a further try in the dying minutes on one of their rare visits to the Dinas half during the second half. Regular supporters of the Villagers will know that this fixture has always produced tight games often won by the slenderest of margins. Not on this occasion — Porth were emphatic winners on a day that the Villagers will rather forget!

Final score Porth Harlequins 35 – 10 Dinas Powys.
