The ‘Villagers’ of Dinas Powys gained their first competitive victory of the season with an eight-try thumping of Llanishen in the WRU Plate.

Although the visitors provided stern opposition in the first-half — keeping within two scores — the expansive play of the Villagers threequarters saw the home side pull away for, what ultimately transpired to be, a comfortable victory.

It was notable that all eight tries were shared amongst the backs with left-wing James Wilthsire crossing three times for his hat-trick, fly-half Callum Bricknell scoring two (which when add to a penalty and seven conversions to brought his personal points tally for the match to significant twenty-two!), right-ring Matthew Williams, and scrum-half Ross Pritchard and centre Rys Evans scoring one a-piece.

The weather and the playing surface were perfect for running rugby; the sub bathed in warm early-autumn sunshine. Dinas raced into a 17-0 lead within thirty-minutes before Llanishen scored a try of their own as the Villagers failed to gather the restart. Both sides then exchanged converted tries and at half-time the ‘Villagers’ led by 24-14.

The second half saw the home side outscore the team from the north of Cardiff by five tries to one. In doing so, they showed enterprise and scintillating rugby played at pace which providing a feast of running rugby for the crowd gathered on the Common. With a final score of 57-19, the Villagers progress into the second round of the competition where they host Swansea side, Birchgrove RFC on the 12th October at the Common.
